Mass Effect 2: I find a bottle of Dr. Chakwas's favorite brandy. I rush back to the ship, excited to tell her. Deeply moved, she graciously offers me a shot. We proceed to get hammered. Talking about the past and the future, all the times she's patched us up, the galaxy's uncertain fate. She timidly asks that, if we survive, we remember this bottle of brandy, and try to do it again next year.
Psychonauts: Raz's inexhaustible valor. Lily's sexy, bratty, no-nonsense awesomeness. The whole last hour or so (not counting the stupidly agonizingly hard boss fight).
NHL 09 : Scoring on a perfect 1-2-3 from behind the net. In OT. In the Playoffs. Against the Ducks.
GTA 4: Fleeing from the cops in a stolen SUV. Driving onto a bridge that rises out of the city, I crash into a police barrier. I smash the window and drop a grenade under the car, intending to reverse out and watch the cop cars blow up. But they've boxed me in! The grenade explodes. My SUV flies, spinning slowly, into the air. It comes down, nose first, on the edge of an apartment building. I crash through the windshield at high speed, rocketing toward the ground. Crunch. Just as time slows down and the screen starts fading to grey... my car lands on top of me. Also, helicopter rides at night.
Tony Hawk Underground: The subway station. Half-pipe for a while, then into a Mullen routine, drifting toward the edge of the platform. Hop off onto the rail and start a slow grind. Twist and hop for a while, building up speed, racking up combos, leap back onto the platform and creep up the pipe for a parting shot of eggplants and handplants. Something like 2.1 million points!
Planescape: Torment: The beginning. The middle. The end.
Nethack: My first win, erasing the shame of my first almost-win. (In which I stood on the wrong altar and offered the Amulet of Yendor to the wrong god.)
GTA: San Andreas: Countless really good escapes from the cops. Finding an ancient crop-duster and seeing those hours of model-airplane practice pay off. Blackjack with Wu Zi.
Leisure Suit Larry 3: Perhaps the beginning of my lifelong love of pixellated nudity.
Gazillionaire: Winning on intermediate for the first time.
Railroad Tycoon 3: Manipulating stock, stealing other railroads' traffic, bulldozing industries to eliminate competition, gambling it all on a swing of the market, driving a spike into fairness and human dignity.
Heroes of Might and Magic 3: Rolling across the map with a mighty dead army and watching its ranks swell with every slaughter.
Fallout 3: Blowing up Megaton.
Oblivion: Wandering in the forest, stumbling upon a beautiful rocky pool fed by a small waterfall. Climbing the slope amid the butterflies, and gasping to see a gorgeous mountain lake fed by four or five large waterfalls, glinting in the morning sunshine.
The Legend of Zelda: First time cutting down one of those shield guys with the Master Sword.
Freedom Force : Lord Dominion's plan. The Secret Origins of Mentor, Man-Bot, The Ant. The battles with Nuclear Winter, Shadow, and Time-Master. Manbot's sacrifice.
Freedom Force Vs. The Third Reich: Sky-King. Just... Sky-King. Also, Tombstone. "Animals wither in my presence."
Spelunky: The City of Gold.
Quake 3: The groan and splash of a zombie, very, very close by.
Bioshock: The gun in the baby buggy.
Arkham Asylym: A perfect fight. A perfect stalk. Hearing the panic in the voice of the last thug. My dead parents. Hysterical laughter. The death scenes. Harley's outfit.
Escape from Hell: Hitler with a nailgun.
Starflight 2: An optimal planet. A precious trade good. A rare lifeform. A rich seam. A feeling that space is really quite big, and that aliens are... well... alien.
Amnesia: The Dark Descent: Knowing that I have to go into that basement, even though I really really really don't want to.
Risk 2: Through shrewd diplomacy and lucky card-drawing, snatching victory from the jaws of defeat.
Civilization 2: Burning down a particularly annoying enemy's capital.
Unreal Tournament: The perfect around-the-corner headshot with a bouncing shuriken.
Metroid: Escaping from that one fucking pit.
Casino Kid: Drawing that inside straight when it was all on the line.
Dwarf Fortress: Watching the Hammerer kill every other dwarf in the city.
Magic the Gathering: Duel of the Planeswalkers: Waltzing through twenty-game gauntlets with my ridiculous Icy Manipulator / Royal Assassin / Psychic Venom or Angelic Voices / Tetravus / Argivian Archaeologist decks.
The Art of Theft: A perfect heist.
Super Mario Brothers 3: 1ups. Lots and lots of 1ups.
Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup: Randart +4 golden dragon armour with rElec and rN+ on D:7... and I'm playing a minotaur.
Rogue Survivor: Spending a week hiding in the hospital basement, eating Spaghetti-o's.
Caves of Qud: Wielding the bloody bloody right arm of Suugosuulu, the Nimble Snapjaw Bear-Baiter.
Kingdom of Loathing: LMAO over and over and over again.
City of Heroes: Fighting those floating-mask guys with some of my friends. Me: Hey, these guys are just floating masks. picks one up and holds it in front of his face Oooo, I'm a scary piece of wood!! Teammate: shoots you in the face Teammate: Oh. Sorry. Me: ......ow.
Doom: Finding the chainsaw without any foreknowledge.
Duke Nukem 3D: Mind blown by the possibilities of a completely new kind of game.
Spider-man (for Sega Genesis) : Defusing that damned bomb.
Spider-man (for PS2) : Swinging around the city like a boss.
Prototype : Jumping and doing horrible things to people around the city like a boss.
The Incredible Hulk (for PS2) : Jumping and being fucking enormous around the city like a boss.
Street Fighter 2 : Winning with cheap-ass moves, seeing my opponent froth at the mouth.
Portal : Almost every single second.
Mines of Titan : Winning at the slot machines. Hacking into the satellite-wide computer network and putting my crew on the list for Power Armor training. Discovering Titan's secret.
Champions of Krynn / Death Knights of Krynn / Dark Queen of Krynn : Epic questing. Reading the Journal book and trying to guess which entries were fake.
Online Dominion : My first win without a single Victory card in my deck.
Ghostbusters : Fighting the Book Golem.
Loom : The prologue cassette, which I've listened to hundreds of times over the last twenty years or so. The swan.
E.T. : Being young enough to think it was an awesome game.
Maniac Mansion : Drawing back the shower curtain and meeting Dead Cousin Ted for the first time.
Day of the Tentacle : More lols than I can remember.
River City Ransom : Finally saving enough nickels and dimes to buy a really awesome technique. Playing soccer with boxes. Smacking guys with guys.
Castlevania 2 : Getting whisked away by a cyclone.
Baseball Stars 2 : A grand slam with two outs in the ninth.
Twilight Zone Pinball : Defeating the power. Nailing super jackpots. Rocking the end-game.
Attack From Mars Pinball : Mopping the floor with those heximelial assholes.
Dragon Age : An offer from Morrigan. A sacrifice.
Big Island Blends : Beating the ridiculously hard last level... eventually.
System Shock 2 : A laboratory, lights flickering, broken glass on the floor. Cage doors ajar. The screeching and hooting of psionic death monkeys all around me.
